The history of the Coast Guard dates back to 1790 with the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service. Early in their existence, members of the Internal Revenue Service had little cohesion between their uniforms. Most of the clothing was taken from Navy ships or was simply chosen for the comfort of life on board.

Unfortunately, much of the early history of the revenue service was lost to the burning of American government buildings by British troops in 1814 and an unrelated fire in 1833. Historians know that the uniform worn by members of the Continental Navy consisted of blue . coats with red lapels and a three-cornered hat Pants on the way For work on a ship they were usually rolled up and black handkerchiefs were allowed to wipe sweat. they were allowed to assume duties in the Revenue Reduction Service while not actively serving in their original capacity. Many who did didn't give up their old uniforms.

The U.S. Coast Guard in its present form did not exist until 1915, when the Revenue Cutter Service and the Life Saving Service formed one organization. The uniform tradition did not change much until 1920, when the Coast Guard began to distinguish itself with distinctive uniforms such as double-breasted and white caps.
Around the same time, Coast Guard aviation became a special function and required new uniforms. The work uniforms of Coast Guard pilots were khaki in summer and forest green in winter. For headgear, pilots could use a collapsible flying cap.
One of the biggest changes in Coast Guard uniform policy came in the 1940s with the official adoption of Navy standards. Both branches used the same clothing, and there was little difference between the uniforms. The Coast Guard has retained the unique features in the corps uniforms, buttons, shoulder insignia and many other uniform elements.
In 1967, the Coast Guard was transferred from the Department of the Treasury to the Department of Transportation. Along with the transition, almost complete similarity to Navy standards ended. During this time, the modern and familiar light blue uniforms became available. In addition, the red and blue "racing stripe" that appears on many Coast Guard ships also appeared on Coast Guard neckties for some uniforms.

The modern Coast Guard uniform represents a departure from many traditions in the name of comfort and utility. No more of the legendary navy uniforms of the old days used by the Coast Guard. The change was partly due to the Coast Guard's strong desire to differentiate itself from the US Navy. In addition, the Coast Guard wanted to maintain its uniforms that represented modern culture.
